Hamilton Island
The Whitsunday Islands are a group of 74 islands located near the North East coast of mainland Australia. They are a part of the state of Queensland and are situated in the heart of the world famous Great Barrier Reef. These islands have become a very popular tourist destination due to the temperate climate and their inherent picturesqueness.
Hamilton Island
Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island in the Whitsunday group of islands. It has the only airport handling passenger vehicles and large cargo aircrafts in the Whitsunday islands.
Geography & Geology
Vigorous volcanic activity has given birth to Hamilton Island. It is a continental island where the Passage peak in the east and the Resort Lookout in the west are connected by the central ridge. This ridge also forms a natural barrier for the popular Catseye beach and the main resort area from the Southeast Trade Winds.
The total area of the island is approximately 70 hectares with the Passage Peak being the highest point (233 metres above sea level). The Whitsundays are all drowned mountains. They were a part of the mainland before the last Ice Age. These mountains were drowned by the lake created by the melting of the ice caps. Now these 74 peaks have become 74 islands of which only 7 have resort facilities. The biggest and most popular of these is Hamilton Island.
The Weather
One of the most important features of Hamilton Island that attracts droves of tourists and makes this small piece of land one of the tourist hotspots of the world is certainly its climate. Due to its favourable location the island has a mean temperature of about 27 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature during summers (December, January and February) is a not too hot 30 degrees Celsius while it dips to almost 23 degrees Celsius during the winter months (June, July and August).
Hamilton Island is a popular tourist destination and thus has a surfeit of hotels and other accommodation options. One of the best options is renting an apartment. Frangipani 204 is the only 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom privately owned & rented beachfront apartment on Hamilton Island. To know more about this apartment and booking options please visit their website at
